I Met My First Troll On Medium Today
I Didnโt Let Him Break Me
Iโve only been on Medium for three weeks.
In that small amount of time Iโve found an enormous, amazing, and supportive community that embraces and encourages creativity.
Everyone on this platform is here for the same reason. I think that is a very large part of why the community is so positive.
But this morning things felt a bit different.
I recently wrote an article about my progress here on Medium. Although Iโm not a top performerโI donโt claim to be eitherโIโm proud of my progress so far.
It took effort and it means Iโm going in the right direction. Itโs a process.
So I was a little taken aback when I saw a comment that I’d recently received. It implied that I wasnโt good enough, and that my 1-week earnings were just chump change compared to this guyโs 4-week performance.
I was also completely shocked that he tried to piggyback off of my posting by linking his article to try and drive my traffic to him.
FYI, thatโs a big etiquette no-no!
I was also surprised that he didn’t have the sense to realize that insulting people for no reason and attempting to generate traffic in one of the most shady ways possible would make him enemies with people instead of generating a loyal following.
Good luck with that, dude!
But thatโs as far as I let it get.
I immediately blocked him and took the rest of the morning off to spend time with my family and to calm down and re-center myself.
After calming down I reminded myself that I am on the right track, I am making progress, and Iโm doing this for me โ not anybody else.
This isnโt a race.
Itโs just me.
And, nobody will make me believe that Iโm not good enough.
