I Met My First Troll On Medium Today

I Didn’t Let Him Break Me

I’ve only been on Medium for three weeks.

In that small amount of time I’ve found an enormous, amazing, and supportive community that embraces and encourages creativity.

Everyone on this platform is here for the same reason. I think that is a very large part of why the community is so positive.

But this morning things felt a bit different.

I recently wrote an article about my progress here on Medium. Although I’m not a top performer—I don’t claim to be either—I’m proud of my progress so far.

It took effort and it means I’m going in the right direction. It’s a process.

So I was a little taken aback when I saw a comment that I’d recently received. It implied that I wasn’t good enough, and that my 1-week earnings were just chump change compared to this guy’s 4-week performance.

I was also completely shocked that he tried to piggyback off of my posting by linking his article to try and drive my traffic to him.

FYI, that’s a big etiquette no-no!

I was also surprised that he didn’t have the sense to realize that insulting people for no reason and attempting to generate traffic in one of the most shady ways possible would make him enemies with people instead of generating a loyal following.

Good luck with that, dude!

But that’s as far as I let it get.

I immediately blocked him and took the rest of the morning off to spend time with my family and to calm down and re-center myself.

After calming down I reminded myself that I am on the right track, I am making progress, and I’m doing this for me — not anybody else.

This isn’t a race.

It’s just me.

And, nobody will make me believe that I’m not good enough.
